Service Projects
2014 Service Projects:
- Project 1: At the January Meeting Jodi Leraas, supervisor for Stearns County Public Health, explained how quilts could be used in two programs with parents and babies. Quilts for Nurse Family Partnership and Healthy Families America should be at least 48 inches square, but could be larger. These quilts will be given to parents when public health nurses are working with them on “tummy time” for their babies and playing with young children on the floor. This is a good time to go through your stash and look for bright colors and fun designs!!
- Project 2: Breaking Free is an organization in St. Paul that works to stop sex trafficking. They provide permanent and transitional housing for women escaping trafficking. We will have a video about their work at a later meeting, but you can learn more about Breaking Free by going to their website: breakingfree.net
- Project3: We will continue to make patient bags for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. These are given to the Coborn Cancer Center. Pattern available: Coborn’s Patient Bag
2013 Service Projects:
- The 2013 Service Project will be “Eagles Healing Nest” which is a home for veterans located on the 124 acre site of the former Minnesota Home School for Girls in Sauk Centre. Their mission is to provide assistance in healing the invisible wounds of war of our service men and women. The “Eagle” represents the past, present, and future military strength, independence, pride and honor. The “Nest” stands for the home, brotherhood, family, safety, and security. The Eagles Nest environment includes things like: organic farming, equine and canine therapy as well as a homey atmosphere. Everything at Eagles Healing Nest is provided through the generosity of volunteers and donations. We quilters can help with creating the homey atmosphere. The following items are needed:
- Twin size bed quilts (60 X 80 or 65 X 85) Veterans may take the quilt with them when they leave if they have a need for it.
- Pillowcases that match the quilts you make would be nice!
- Seasonal Wallhangings in arious sizes.
- Everyday and Seasonal Tablerunners no larger than 24″ square or 4′ long.

Past Years Service Projects:
In 2011, our quilt members served this area by creating a number of quilts for Habitat for Humanity homes, and by providing over 300 bags for the Coborn’s Cancer Center.
In 2010, our guild served Anna Marie’s Shelter, providing adult throw quilts, child quilts, and pillowcases.
The pillowcases were also part of the national project called “1 Million Pillowcase Challenge”.
In 2009, we supported Journey Home. Guild members have signed up for specific wall-hangings for this home. This is a residential facility providing both extended care and halfway house programming for chemically dependent women and their children. It is a structured, recovery-focused setting for women ages 16 and older, referred to Journey Home after th completion of primary chemical dependency treatment. Next, “Flat Cribbage Mats” were given to a local school classroom. Students go to nursing homes to play Cribbage with residents. Small colorful bags were given to Coborn’s Cancer Center and to be filled information and materials for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
